China supplies more than 50% of the world's textile exports, and Jiangsu Province alone hosts thousands of fabric mills — from family workshops to vertical factories employing hundreds. For a foreign buyer, that abundance is both an opportunity and a problem: how do you separate a reliable woolen fabric supplier in China from the rest?

This checklist is based on our own experience serving European and Southeast Asian buyers. It covers what to verify before you order, what to ask for in samples, and the red flags that should make you walk away.

1. Verify the Factory, Not Just the Website

A polished website or Alibaba storefront proves nothing. Start with the fundamentals:

• Business license & export qualification — Ask for the company's business license (营业执照) and confirm it includes textile manufacturing or trading. Check if they hold an export license or work through an export agent.
• Physical presence — Request a video tour of the factory floor. A legitimate woolen mill should have weaving looms, dyeing equipment, and finishing lines. Trading companies can also be fine — just know which you're dealing with, because it affects pricing and lead times.
• Third-party verification — Check the supplier on SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Alibaba's Verified Supplier program. A factory audit report (BSCI, WCA, ISO 9001) is a strong signal.

2. Ask for a Complete Spec Sheet

A professional supplier responds to an inquiry with a full specification sheet, not just a price. Demand at minimum:

• Fiber composition (e.g., 80% wool / 20% polyester)
• Weight in gsm and oz/yd²
• Finished width and shrinkage rate
• Color fastness grades (washing, rubbing, light)
• Pilling resistance rating
• Available color range and the cost of custom colors

If a supplier cannot provide these numbers in writing, they either don't know their own product or don't control their production — both are disqualifying.

3. Test Samples the Right Way

Sample quality is the single best predictor of bulk quality. Here's how to test properly:

• Order samples from 2–3 suppliers in parallel, ideally of the same spec, so you can compare side by side.
• Check hand feel and drape — woolen fabric is bought by touch. Compare softness, thickness consistency, and finishing (does it shed? does the surface pill easily?).
• Run a lab test — composition verification, shrinkage test, and color fastness testing cost $30–80 per test at labs like SGS or Intertek. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
• Keep the physical sample — when the bulk order arrives, compare it against your approved sample. "Bulk quality will match sample" should be written into the contract.

4. Understand MOQ and Pricing Structure

Typical MOQs for Chinese woolen fabric mills:

• Stock colors: 300–500 meters per color
• Custom colors: 1,000–3,000 meters per color
• Custom composition/weave: 3,000+ meters, plus development fees

Price should be quoted FOB Shanghai or Ningbo (the two main export ports for Jiangsu mills). Ask for the price breakdown by color and quantity — a reputable supplier offers tiered pricing and transparent dyeing and finishing charges.

5. Red Flags That Should End the Conversation

• Price 30%+ below the market average with no explanation
• Refusal to provide samples, or "sample fee required before any discussion"
• No spec sheet, only a price list
• Factory claims they can do everything in 5 days (even stock colors need 10–15 days for production)
• Payment terms demanding 100% T/T in advance for first orders (standard is 30% deposit / 70% balance)

6. Why Zhangjiagang Matters

Zhangjiagang, where our own mill is located, is one of China's most concentrated woolen and coating fabric clusters. The city sits 40 minutes from Shanghai's port infrastructure, which means shorter logistics time and lower inland freight. More importantly, the density of mills creates fierce quality competition — the suppliers who survive here do so by meeting export-grade standards year after year.
