One of the first questions every fabric buyer asks is: "What's your MOQ?" The answer reveals a lot about a mill — its size, its flexibility, and whether it's a fit for your order volume. But MOQ isn't a single number. It depends on what exactly you're ordering. Here's a field guide to fabric MOQs from Chinese textile mills.

What Exactly Is a Fabric MOQ?

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the smallest quantity a mill will produce for one SKU — typically expressed in meters per color. It exists because textile production has fixed setup costs: warping a loom, mixing a dye batch, and pattern-setting cost the same whether you produce 200 or 2,000 meters.

These ranges are for woven woolen and coating fabrics. Knitted fabrics and standard polyester constructions often have lower MOQs (500–1,000 m).

Why MOQs Vary So Much Between Mills

• Vertical mills (own weaving + dyeing) usually have higher MOQs because their machinery runs best on long batches — but they also give you better unit prices at scale.
• Trading companies quote lower MOQs because they consolidate your order with other buyers at partner factories. The trade-off: less control over quality and lead times.
• Small workshops may accept 300–500 m custom orders, but consistency across repeat orders can be risky.

Small Order? Here's How to Work with MOQs

1. Start with stock colors

If you're a new brand testing the market, choose 2–4 colors from the mill's stock palette. You'll get the lowest MOQ and fastest delivery (7–15 days), and you can validate your product before committing to custom development.

2. Consolidate colors into one order

Most mills allow mixed-color orders: e.g., 3 colors × 1,000 m = 3,000 m total, meeting the custom-color threshold across the order rather than per color. Ask for this explicitly — it's the most common flexibility mills quietly offer.

3. Share the development cost

For custom fabrics, mills often split or reduce development fees if you commit to a production quantity. A $300–800 development charge is normal; negotiate it against a first-order commitment.

4. Consider joint orders or buying groups

Some trading companies run "group buying" programs where multiple small brands share one dye lot. You pay a small premium but unlock MOQs of 300–500 m for custom colors.

5. Order samples first — always

Samples (1–5 m) are almost always available regardless of MOQ. Never commit to a production MOQ without first approving a lab dip and a top-of-roll sample. Sample cost is usually $10–50 plus shipping, and is typically refunded or deducted from your first bulk order.

Questions to Ask Alongside MOQ

MOQ alone doesn't tell you if an order is viable. Always ask these together:

• Lead time from sample approval to delivery?
• Is the MOQ per color or per order?
• Are there tiered price breaks above the MOQ?
• What are the payment terms? (Standard: 30% deposit, 70% before shipment, or LC)
• What happens to defect rates above AQL 2.5 — replacement or credit?
• Can you produce repeat orders at the same shade (lot-to-lot consistency)?
